Vermilion Parish Police Jury remains same

There are a total of 14 Vermilion Parish Police Jurors, and only three had opposition in Saturday’s election.
All three sitting police jurors were able to win their seat back.
In Abbeville, Paul Bourgeois Jr. returns for his second term as police juror. He beat Darrel Hebert 471 votes (67 percent) to 236 votes (33 percent).

Couvillon wins as sheriff in Vermilion Parish

Vermilion Parish has elected Mike Couvillon as sheriff for the fourth straight term winning easily over Toby Walker, a former Abbeville policeman.
Couvillon received 11,748 votes (79%), while Walker garnered 3,146 votes (21%).

Eagle Project Stolen

At the age of 17, Nicholas Valdetero of Abbeville learned life is not fair.
For the last month, Valdetero with the help of scouts from Troop 85 in Abbeville began working on Valdetero’s community Eagle Scout project.
His project was to refurbish and clean the four wharfs along La. 82, south of Forked Island.

Abbeville takes step to recover delinquent city court fines, costs

Abbeville City Court shares an issue with similar entities around the country.
“Nationwide there is a problem,” City Attorney Ike Funderburk explained during a committee meeting Tuesday. “That problem is getting people who have been convicted or pled to crimes to pay their fines and their costs. Millions of dollars are owed to court systems around the country.
“Abbeville City Court is not different.”
