‘70s Rock re-union band concert
If you remember some of the ‘70s South Louisiana night clubs, you may remember the Acadiana rock band ZUES.
The band played in hometown favorite hangouts like Clem’s and the Spanish Villa in Abbeville, The River Oaks and Uncle Pete’s in Lafayette, The Southern Club in Opelousas, Paul’s Lounge in Jeanerette, Dudley’s in Franklin, The Pirate’s Den in Kaplan, Signorelli’s in St. Martinville, The Evangeline Club in Ville Platte, The Purple Peacock in Eunice and The Safari Club in Galliano.
The ZUES line-up over the years included Robert Wilson (bass/vocals) of Erath; Ted Tate and Danny Perry (guitar/vocals) of Abbeville; and David Choate (drums) of Abbeville, Kent Himel (guitar/keyboards/vocals), Dr. George Cousin (keyboards/guitar/vocals), Kevin Caffery (vocals/keyboard), and Danny Castille (drums) all of New Iberia; Tony Goulas (guitar/vocals) of Lafayette and Bob Holbrook (drums/vocals) of Lafayette. Michael Caffery and Jon Himel of New Iberia handled sound.
Moving on in the music world were Himel, and Castille along with Randy Delcambre (bass/vocals) as they formed the group PREZENCE, also in the late ‘70s. Their popularity rose to the level of an opening act for national performing acts such as Black Oak Arkansas, Benny Mardones, Molly Hatchet and Redbone. Locally, Goulas was the mainstay of the band 5th Avenue in the ‘80s. In addition, Goulas and Wilson played with the Fabulous Boogie Kings for a number of years in the 90’s Later, Goulas put in a stint as guitarist with rock icon Edgar Winter.
Almost all of the original members of ZUES will be performing and Michael Caffery will join the group as a lead vocalist, along with Dr. Tim Himel and Allen Hayes of New Iberia on bass/vocals. The free concert begins at 6:30 p.m. at Bouligny Plaza on Main Street in New Iberia Sunday, September 6.
