Eagles using summer as learning experience

The Abbeville Eagles American Legion team is comprised of only kids from the Vermilion Catholic baseball team.
It is also being coached by the VC head coach Steven Adams, and this summer is used more for teaching and learning.
“I’m not worried about wins and losses over the course of the summer,” Adams said. “None of that matters right now. All that matters is our kids are learning, getting better and are prepared for the regular season, next fall.”
With this summer schedule only being for teaching purposes, the Eagles may not have far to go come the baseball regular season.
The Eagles squared off against class 5A Comeaux, and lost by the final score of 8-4 in four innings.
The game was a lot closer than the score would indicate.
The Eagles got up early with two runs in the bottom of the first inning.
Comeaux would fight back and in the top of the third scored five runs, and three more runs in the top of the fourth.
The Eagles would battle back in the bottom of the fourth to score two more runs to bring the game to 8-4 before it was called due to time restraints.
The Eagles had their chances through out the game.
They had the bases loaded on two separate occasions, but were not able to get that timely hit to score multiple runs.
Also the Eagles had some trouble on the mound.
The Eagles pitchers walked a total of seven Comeaux batters.
“We had a lot of walks, and we just couldn’t get that big hit we needed,” Adams said. “That’s baseball though. Our guys were a little rusty but overall I think they played well. I’m not worried about the final result right now, I’m just worried about how the kids played the game.
“I think we did a lot of learning and that bodes well for us the rest of the summer.”
