Patriots, Wildcats reach parish finals

DELCAMBRE - The number one seed and the number two seed reached the boys finals of the Vermilion Parish Basketball Tournament.
North Vermilion (5-0) came into the tournament seeded No. 1, while Abbeville, the defending champions, is seeded No. 2.
Abbeville and North Vermilion played in the finals and the game was still in progress as of the Meridional’s deadline.
Before the finals, both teams had little trouble with their opponents on Wednesday.

North Vermilion jumped on Erath in the first quarter and never got off the Bobcats until the end of the game.
North Vermilion’s Malik Criner made a layup which made the score 15-2 with 47 seconds to play in the first period.
The Patriots, fresh off a tournament win in Grand Isle, continued to pour it on Erath in the second quarter. The Patriots outscored Erath 22-12 to go into halftime leading 40-16.
Criner, who finished with 22 points, scored six in the second period.
The Bobcats made a small comeback in the second half. At one time they trimmed the lead down to 11 but could not hold it.
Bren Faulk, who finished with 19, made four 3-pointers in the second half for Erath.
Just when the Bobcats thought they were back in the game in the fourth period, North Vermilion turned up the heat and put the game away.
NV outscored Erath 21-12 in the fourth quarter.
Dreylan Adams scored all of his 10 points in the fourth period for NV.
Other scorers for North Vermilion were Blake Turner (9), Grant Dardar (12), Tyler Galley (4), Bailey LeLeux (5), Creed Rudd (2), Ryan Broussard (4) and Jaylen Miller (2).
Scorers for Erath were Elijah Mitchell (11), Chene Blanchette (2), Zach Trangmar (2), Jaylen Sinegal (5) and Kydrick Vital (5).

The Abbeville Wildcats' pressure defense was too much for the Kaplan Pirates to handle Wednesday night in the second round of the parish tournament.
The Wildcats forced Kaplan to make 10 turnovers and turned most of them into points.
The Pirates hung around Abbeville in the first half and only led 13-9 after the first period.
Kaplan actually led 9-7 with 1:34 to go in the first period.
Abbeville’s Javontae Decuir put his team back on top with five straight points as the first quarter ended.
The second period was pretty much the same as the first period. Abbeville’s half court trap resulted in turners and easy lay ups for the Wildcats.
Kevin Williams and Decuir made layups that put AHS up 21-10.
Kaplan rallied right before halftime when Keegan Gaspard nailed a 3-pointer and Dylan Touchet canned a two-pointer to make it a 23-17 game with two minutes to play at halftime.
Early in the third period, Kaplan was still hanging around, down, 33-28, with 2:45 to play in the period.
But then the period ended, AHS turned up the defense and built the lead to 47-30.
For the second game in a row, Abbeville had more than 10 players score.
Jacoby Senegal led with 11 point and Decuir made 10.
Other AHS scorers were Jahidi White (9), Nadaedrion Mouton (7), Kevin Williams (6), Jamyri Evans (5), Matt Johnson (4), DeMarcus Collins (2) and Allen Arclies (3).
Kaplan’s scorers were Ryan Gratz (9), Dane Bertrand (7), Keegan Gaspard (5), Kain Broussard (5), Savion Meaux (5), Dylan Touchet (7), Quintlan Cobb (4) and Taylor Dupuis (2).
