Gueydan falls to Sacred Heart of Ville Platte

The Sacred Heart Trojans flexed their offensive muscles in the game versus the smaller Gueydan Bears Friday night at Gueydan High School.
The overall size and speed of Sacred Heart proved to be more than Gueydan could handle, and that was evident from the opening kickoff.
“We are the second smallest 1A school in the state,” said Gueydan head coach Jay Landry. “Tonight we played as hard as we possibly could against a really good 2A school.”
Two plays into the game, Sacred Heart scored on a 10-yard touchdown run by Dylan Scully, set up by a 42- yard pass from quarterback Joshua LaHaye to Caleb Soileau. After a blocked extra point, the score was 6-0 with 13:52 left in the opening quarter.
On the ensuing drive for Gueydan, Cade Sonnier’s pass was intercepted by defensive lineman Bevan Dupre and returned 20 yards to the Gueydan five.
One play later, the Trojans tacked on another score, this time on a 5-yard run by junior running back Garrick Fontenot. The two-point conversion try was successful, and with less than four minutes off of the clock, the Trojans had seized a 14-0 lead.
On the next drive, Gueydan’s offense had a 15-play drive that ate up over 10 minutes of the clock, but did not result in any points, when the Bears were stopped on fourth down in the redzone.
The Trojans quickly responded after the defensive stand, and scored seven plays later on a 15-yard touchdown run by Scully with 10:21 left before halftime.
Gueydan threatened again with another long drive, taking up nine minutes off the clock, but again left empty handed, getting stopped on fourth down again at the Trojan 5-yard line.
“We left some points on the board tonight,” said Landry. “When you have long drives like that, you have to punch it in.”
Sacred Heart took over on downs at its own 5, and three plays later, quarterback LaHaye again connected with Soileau for the 95-yard score, givng the Trojans a 28-0 lead at halftime.
Gueydan received possession first in the third quarter and scored on their first drive capped off by an 18-yard touchdown run by Malik Criner. A failed conversion attempt, cut the Bears deficit to 28-6.
The Trojans responded quickly with a touchdown of their own on a 11-yd scamper by Fontenot to put Sacred Heart ahead 35-6 with 3:05 left in the third quarter.
Gueydan capped off the last score of the game with 30 seconds left when Criner scored from 14-yards out.
The Bears finished the game with a total of 240 yards rushing. Criner led the way for Gueydan with 92 yards rushing on 17 attempts. Trevor Breaux added 73 yards on the ground on 14 carries, and Trevor Ladelle chipped in with 56 yards on 16 carries.
“Our guys have to understand that they have nothing but each other,” said Landry. “We can’t worry about who we play and what they do, we have to worry about what we do.”
Next Friday, Gueydan hosts North Central, and Sacred Heart hosts the Mamou Demons.
