Eagles come up short against Lafayette

The Abbeville Eagles squared off against Lafayette last night, and despite getting out to an early lead fell to Lafayette 12-5.
The Eagles were able to take an early 2-1 lead after the first, and then Lafayette’s bats came alive and scored 11 more runs between the top of the second and the top of the fifth inning.
“It is a combination of things,” head coach Steven Adams said. “There is a lot of unknown the first time a batter sees a pitcher, and that is a good thing for the batter. So we were able to score some runs early.
“Then their pitcher kind of settled in and we just couldn’t seem to get our bats going, but I am proud of the fact they were able to bounce back towards the end of the game and score some runs. That’s a big momentum boost for us right now.”
The Eagles were able to get back on the score board in the bottom of the fifth inning when Tyler Derouen hit an RBI triple to right center field,
Derouen would later score on an error by the shortstop.
The Eagles would score one more run in the bottom of the seventh inning on a Derouen RBI single.
The Eagles left the bases loaded at the end of the game, and lost by the final score of 12-5.
The Eagles are using this American Legion schedule as a chance to learn and grow as a baseball team.
“I like some of the things I saw out there tonight,” Adams said. “This is our opportunity to get some of the kids that normally wouldn’t get a lot of work during the regular season a chance to get some live game action.”
The Eagles will be back in action tonight as they will play host to Arc Angel.
The game is scheduled to start at 5:30 p.m. at Sellers field.
