VC football staff has new faces

On the first official day of practice, there were a lot of new faces at Vermilion Catholic’s practice.
Sure, there were new faces amongst the team, but there were also new faces amongst the coaches.
One familiar face returning is VC’s most successful head coach over a three-year period.
Head coach Russell Kuhns, a former Wisconsin Badger linebacker in the early 2000’s, begins his fourth year at VC. In that short time, he helped coach his team to the Class 1A state title. He is averaging 10 wins a season, including three district titles. The Eagles are favored to win its fourth district title.
Gone is “Roch” Charpentier, who was the offensive coordinator of the explosive Eagles last year.
Look for Kuhns to call offensive and defensive plays early in the season.
Joining the coaching staff are former Vermilion Catholic Head Coach Ossie Blaize, who was the head coach at VC in the 1990s.
Blaize is going to coach the offensive line and linebackers on defense.
Also, helping coach the offense is former VC quarterback Brennan Gallet. Gallet is an all-state quarterback, who graduated from VC in 2014. He also helped his team win the Class 1A state title and was the MVP of the championship game.
Gallet, on Monday, was showing VC’s quarterbacks proper foot technique when throwing the football.
“Brennan brings a lot to the staff,” said Kuhns. “He knows the system because he ran it two years ago. He knows the ends and outs of playing quarterback and did very well while he was here.”
Back helping on defense is volunteer coach Kevin Fouquier. Fouquier was an assistant coach when the Eagles won state two years ago. He has been with Kuhns three out of the last four years. He will coach the defensive line.
Fouquier is expected to be at Friday night games when he can because his son is expected to be a starting line backer for the UL Cajuns this fall. If the Cajuns are out of town, Fouquier will travel to see his son and the Cajuns play.
“Kevin knows the game. He can contribute of lot,” Kuhns added.
Also joining the staff is Early Doucet, a former LSU and NFL player from St. Martinville. Doucet is going to coach the receivers and the defensive backs.
