NFL Superbowl Champ Brandon Mitchell busted for drugs

Abbeville’s own Brandon Mitchell is a New England Patriots Super Bowl Champion, has a youth football league in Abbeville named after him for playing in the NFL for seven years, and now finds himself in trouble with the law.

The Vermilion Parish Task Force arrested Brandon Mitchell, 33, and his girlfriend 32-year old Dawn Zenon.

Mitchell and Zenon are still in the Vermilion Parish jail as of press-time.

Their bond is set at $145,000 each.

Mitchell, who lives at 61115 Eldridge Road, is being charged with possession of cocaine with intent to distribute, possession of crystal meth with intent to distribute, possession of liquid codeine with intent to distribute, manufacturing of cocaine, and possession of a controlled dangerous substance in the presence of a juvenile.

Zenon has been booked under the same charges as Mitchell.

Agents of the Task Force located five and half ounces of suspected powdered cocaine, two ounces of suspected crystal meth, two bottles of suspected liquid codeine, a measuring cup with white powder residue, and a fork with white powder residue. Also located was $4,535 in cash.

The arrest of the two, according to a press release, is the culmination of a two-year investigation involving hours of surveillance and the cooperation of several agencies both of Texas and Louisiana.

Mitchell, who starred at Abbeville High School in football and track, signed a football scholarship to Texas A&M. He had a stellar four years at Texas A&M, and was drafted in the second round in 1997 by the New England Patriots.

He played for New England for five years and helped the Patriots win a Super Bowl in 2001.

His best season was in 1999 when he had 48 tackles in 16 games.

Mitchell finished his career with 198 total tackles and 11 sacks. He ended his career with the Seattle Seahawks because of an injury.
