Notre Dame shuts out Erath
ERATH- After two consecutive wins, while outscoring their opponents 99-0, it is clear that the Notre Dame Pioneers are sending a message to the rest of District 6-3A.
Two dynamic plays within the first minute, sparked a 41-0 victory over the Erath Bobcats.
Notre Dame has bounced back with a vengeance after a 56-28 loss to Catholic High of New Iberia two weeks ago. Notre Dame head coach Lewis Cook was happy with his team’s performance.
“I was proud of the way we played tonight,” Cook said. “It says a lot about our team,” “We’ve been playing well on defense, putting pressure on people.” The start of the game may have been an omen of things to come for the Bobcats, because Hayden Bourgeois took the opening kickoff 88 yards for a score.
Things did not seem to get better at all for Erath. On the Bobcats first play from scrimmage, quarterback Ben LeBlanc mishandled the snap, which resulted in a fumble that was recovered by Notre Dame.
A couple of plays later, tailback Damon Comeaux scored on an 8-yard run through the heart of the Bobcat defense.
After the early barrage of points by Notre Dame, both teams swapped three-and-outs throughout the remainder of the first and majority of the second quarter, until Comeaux reached pay dirt from 12 yards out to give Notre Dame a three score lead.
“After giving up those two quick scores, I was really proud of how we played going into the half,” said Erath head coach David Comeaux. “I really thought if we didn’t let them score right before half, it could have been a different game at 14-0.”
A punt by Erath on the first drive of the third quarter showed similarities to their poor first half.
Comeaux completed the hat trick a few plays later on a 37-yard run to give his team a 28-0 advantage early on in the third quarter.
Notre Dame added insult to injury with two more scores to end their scoring for the night. Joe Faulk broke loose for a 70-yard race to endzone, and it was only fitting for Bourgeois to score the last touchdown of the game since he scored the first.
This time, Bourgeois intercepted LeBlanc’s pass and returned it 35 yards untouched for the score.
