Eagles, Bears clash in district matchup

The Vermilion Catholic Eagles and the Gueydan Bears will take the field Friday in Gueydan, heading in two opposite directions.
Vermilion Catholic seems to have found it’s groove in the 2014 season. After a blowout loss to Catholic High of New Iberia, VC has bounced back with four straight wins including two disrict wins. Head Coach Russell Kuhns talked about his team’s performance up to this point.
“We have gotten better and better,” he said. “We haven’t played a perfect game, so all we can do is keep working to get better.”
Linebacker-turned-quarterback Hunter Frith is one of those players that has gotten better with each game. So far in the young season, Frith has thrown for 1165 yards with 10 touchdowns.
The Eagle offense is filled with a plethora of weapons at Frith’s disposal, including swiss-army knife Tyler Derouen, who can slice up a defense in the run game or the passing game. Derouen has accounted for 12 total touchdowns this season, including one passing touchdown.
Emile Trahan and Chris Campbell provide big-play ability with each time they touch the ball.
Gueydan enters the game winless in five attempts. Their latest defeat coming at the hands of district rival Highland Baptist 56-6.
It has been tough sledding for Gueydan, as the team’s losing streak extends back to the 2012 season. The Bears have had to cope with a lack of players as well as injuries to the players they do have.
A bright spot for the Bears is their rushing attack led by the three-headed monster of Malik Criner, Trevor Breaux and Trevor Ladelle.
One thing that cannot be mistaken with this Gueydan team is their will to compete, according to Kuhns.
“We know that they will come out and play hard,” he said. “We just have to be ready to execute and play well.”
