Erath beats Franklin, pickup first win
In nail-biting fashion, the Erath Bobcats secured their first win of the David Comeaux era with a 21-20 victory over the Franklin Hornets at Robert J. Segura Sr. Memorial Stadium for homecoming.
Both teams, desperate for a win, fought tooth and nail to the very end, with the Bobcats pulling out the victory.
“Im happy about the way the guys played,” said Erath head coach David Comeaux. “They played the game with heart, and they finished the game strong.”
Erath drew first blood on their second drive of the game on 13-yard run by Elijah Mitchell to put the Bobcats up 7-0.
Franklin matched the score of Erath with 8:10 remaining in the second quarter on a 27-yard touchdown pass from quarterback David Kinchen. A successful 2-point conversion put Franklin up 8-7.
After a stop by the Franklin defense, the Hornets scored again, this time on a 76-yard bomb from Kinchen to D’andre Charles. A failed 2-point conversion attempt left the score at 14-7 in favor of the Hornets.
With less than 21 seconds left in the half, Erath tied the game when Ben LeBlanc connected with Ross Granger on an 11-yard touchdown pass.
Like a heavyweight title fight, the Hornets swung back on the ensuing kickoff with an 85-yard return for a touchdown by Charles Webb to send Franklin into halftime with a 20-14 lead.
The final score of the game came with 8:28 left in the third quarter on a 3-yard run by Mitchell.
Franklin threatened late in the game with under five minutes to play, but an interception and 55-yard return by Zach Broussard killed the Hornet’s drive.
With a turnover on downs by Erath with 1:13 left, Franklin had one last chance to win the game. It came down to a fourth down play in which Kinchen was sacked as time expired.
Mitchell led the Bobcats with 148 yards and two touchdowns on 27 carries. LeBlanc went 4-9 for 32 yards with no interceptions. Granger led the receiving corps with 31 yards on three receptions, and a touchdown.
With district match ups starting soon, Comeaux expressed the importance of getting a win heading towards their tough district schedule.
“We get better everyday,” he said. “Each week we are getting closer and closer, and this week we wanted to break down the door. Getting this win is huge going into district. Win or lose this team will get better everyday.”
Erath is in action next Friday when they travel to Plaquemine to play St. John.
