Campos: Center of attention at Erath High
ERATH - There will be a few new faces on Erath High’s offensive line, but there will also be a familiar face.
Erath High senior Zack Campos (6-1, 215 lbs) is a three-year starter for the EHS Bobcats. For the last two years, he has been the Bobcats’ center. As a sophomore, he played tackle.
With one year under his belt at center, nerves will not be an issue for Campos. “I have adjusted well,” he said about playing center.
The center’s job is not just about walking up to the offensive line, listening to the quarterback’s snap count and then snapping the football. He has a lot more responsibility than just hiking the football. When he leaves the huddle, he looks over the defensive line and the linebackers as he walks to the line. When he gets over the football, he calls a play for the linemen. The play is telling the linemen how to block based on what he saw on defense. He needs to read if the defense is going blitz or not.
He has no trouble making the offensive call, he said.
New Erath head coach David Comeaux relies on his center to make the correct call.
“He calls the protection,” Comeaux said. “He looks at the linebackers and makes a call. Zack is that smart. I have all the confidence in him.”
Campos and the rest of the Bobcats have been working out and running three mornings a week this summer. They will begin football practice in August.
The regular season gets underway Sept. 4-5.
With only two starters (Lane Faulk, left guard) returning on the offensive line, question marks surround the offensive line.
Campos is confident the new players will be able to protect and move the football. He said he has witnessed them bond this summer and this past spring.
“Our offensive line knows what to do,” Campos added. “They are talented.”
Coach Comeaux also plans to use Campos on defense as a defensive end. He will be one of a handful of players who will be playing on offense and defense for EHS.
When the football season ends, Campos will put on his basketball sneakers where he is expected to start at center for the Bobcats this school year.
After high school, Campos has plans to go to college. His dream is to continue playing football at a higher level. When playing is over, he wants to coach it.
“I love the game, so I want to stay in it as long as I can,” he added.
