29’ers score two late runs to win 3-1

The Abbeville 29’ers squared off against Carencro Monday night, and with two insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth inning were able to win by the final score of 3-1.
“I do admire the way they were able to come back and generate a few runs and win the game, 3-1,” 29’ers head coach Darin Desormeaux said. “These guys here have a lot of baseball under their belt. We have a lot of kids playing different positions than they normally play, and they are able to do that because they have a lot of baseball knowledge. It makes my job easier because I can move all of these kids in and out of different positions.”
The 29’ers scored their first run in the top of the first inning, after Seth Patin got a single and then stole second and third base.
Patin was able to cross home plate and give the 29’ers the 1-0 lead thanks to a Wes Meaux RBI single.
After having three base runners in the bottom of the first inning, the 29’ers were only able to manage three base runners in the second through the fifth inning.
“There is something about this team, and I’m not sure what it is,” Desormeaux said. “The scouting report on these guys (Carencro) was that they didn’t hit the ball very well. So once our guys learned what the opponent is supposed to be, they play down to the opponent.
“I also learned that once they get a lead, even if it’s just one run, they get complacent.”
The 29’ers were able to get the bats going again in the bottom of the sixth inning.’
Alan Rowell led off the inning with a walk.
Then after two consecutive outs, Dylan Duhon reached base on an error, and then Drake Broussard and Seth Patin drew walks to score Rowell.
Duhon would later score on a passed ball, and that would give the 29’ers the eventual 3-1 win.
The defense and pitching have been the things that the 29’ers have been able to hang their hat on all season long.
It is what helped lead them to a win on Monday night.
“We have 11 kids out of our 14 man roster that can go out there and eat up some innings on the mound,” Desormeaux said. “We have played a lot of baseball in the past week, and thankfully (Seth) Patin, was able to come in and pitch well for us. I probably could have pushed him another inning or two, but I’d rather not risk him getting an injury.”
Seth Patin started the game for the 29’ers on the mound, and he pitched a solid five inning.
Patin allowed only three hits and two walks in his five inning pitched, along with striking out four Carencro batters.
Patin also led the way at the plate for the 29’ers. He reached base in two of his three plate appearances.
He drew a walk and had a single, and would score the first run for the 29’ers. He also stole two bases.
The 29’ers were in action last night, and will face off against Lafayette tonight in Lafayette.
