Vermilion Catholic honors Fr. Theriot with emblem on helmet

There was something different about Vermilion Catholic’s football helmet Friday night against Central Catholic.
For the their first playoff game, the emblem “Father T” was on one side of their football helmets.
The emblem was in honor of Father Donald Theriot, who passed away last week. Fr. Theriot was an avid fan of Vermilion Catholic athletics. Also on the sideline was his chair with his hat on it.
The idea to put the sticker on the helmet was VC head football coach Russell Kuhns. He said he thought about it the day Fr. Theriot passed away.
He ordered the stickers and informed his players on Thursday.
“I was pretty close to Father T in the short time I was here,” said Kuhns. “He would come to all of our practices.”
Kuhns said he has seen small stickers on helmets in honor of someone.
“Father T met more to me than just a little sticker,” he said. “I wanted something bigger.”
With the sticker on their helmet, the Eagles cruised to a 34-0 win over Central Catholic of Morgan City in the second round of the football playoffs.
