Celebrating 70th birthdays
On Saturday, Feb. 8, the Kaplan High School class of 1962 gathered in Kaplan at the outdoor cabana of Darlene and Terry Broussard to celebrate the 70th birthdays of the classmates. The celebration was hosted by the classmates whose birthdays will be in January, February and March of this year.
The story of this class began in Sept. of 1950 when they started first grade at the old Kaplan Elementary on Sixth Street. After fifth grade, they transferred to the building that is now Rene Rost Middle School where they continued with junior high, then high school.
Through the years, they have continued gathering together every 10 years, then every five years and then every year. The 50th class reunion consisted of three event - a dinner at Hebert’s on the night they graduated, a two day and nigh reunion for the homecoming festivities, and in Nov. of 2012, a weekend in Orange Beach, AL.
This year, to celebrate the 70th birthdays, the celebration began on Feb. 8 in Kaplan, and plan to get together every three months during the years.
The days were spent reminiscing and catching up on what was going on in everyone lives, as well as viewing old videos and reunions through the years. Everyone enjoyed a delicious meal of jambalaya, corn macque choux, green beans, salad and French bread. The meal was finished with Italian cream cake, fig cake, cup cakes and other desserts.
In attendance were Lena (Richard) Hebert, Shelton (Shine) Monic and Mary Lynn, Diane (Frederick) Trahan and Dillon, Ella Jane (Harrington) Harrington and Don, Sylvia (Cormier) Hardy and Etienne, Ann (Broussard) Langlinais and Mike, Mary Ann (Lapoint) Harrington and Richard, Linda (Meaux) Abshire and Richard, Inez (Boudoin) Broussard and Glynn, Gerald Touchet and Linda, Boyd Girouard, Betty and Olivia, Patty (Compete) Doise and Ike, Roland Simon and Barbara, Larry Vidalier and Beverly, Betty (Lege) LeBlanc and Kelly, Louissy Romero and Vickie Thompson, and Stan Hardee.
