Vermilion Parish 4-H News
Demonstrations, speeches, portfolios, and foods workshop anyone? On Saturday, December 14, 2013, Vermilion 4-H held a Fundamentals workshop to learn the basics of preparing and presenting a speech or demo for Demonstration Day. In addition, 4-5th graders participated in a Healthy Snack workshop while the 6th-12th graders learned how to tackle the Portfolio record-keeping system. Beginning at 9:00 am, 4-H Agent Shannan Waits discussed the basics of a good demonstration. Marcus Broussard, a 4-H’er from Abbeville High School, presented a demo on how to make a fruit smoothie. Each participant was given a simple demonstration to practice. The group was then divided and the 4-5th graders participated in the foods workshop, then participated in a fitness activity. The 6-12th graders learned how to complete portfolios. (Submitted by Marcus Broussard, Jr. Leader Reporter)
Annemarie Broussard was recently selected at the LA State Fair in Shreveport to represent Louisiana at the North American International Livestock Exposition (NAILE) in Louisville, Kentucky.
Annemarie is the daughter of Timothy and Gwen Broussard of Abbeville. She traveled to Louisville from November 14-18, 2013 to participate in the Junior Livestock Show, along with 30 other exhibitors from across the state. Annemarie, a 4-H’er at FIEB Elementary, showed her Braford Base heifer. She was among 1,400 4-H’ers from across the United States participating in the Junior Show.
The beef educational award is an all expense paid trip sponsored by the LSU AgCenter and the Louisiana 4-H Foundation.
NAILE is the world’s largest all-breed, purebred livestock show. Ten different species of livestock compete in the exposition, and the purebred beef events are the largest in the world. An open show follows the junior show. (Submitted by: Cailyn Simon, FIEB 4-H Club Reporter)
