Kaplan prepares for West St. Mary

The Kaplan Pirates and Lady Pirates are playing host to district rival West St. Mary, weather permitting, tonight at Kaplan’s gym.

“They (West St. Mary) have two kids that can score at will, and that worries me a little,” Pirates Head Coach Jeff Davis said. “They have been like us all year long, up and down.”

The Pirates come into this game on the heels of losing their first district match-up against North Vermilion on Tuesday night.

Despite the loss on Tuesday night the Pirates are playing some good basketball heading into their district schedule.

The Pirates have won four of their last six basketball games, and look to make it five of their last seven tonight.

“West St. Mary is a very good basketball team,” Davis said. “We had a few good practices, and I feel we are ready. Tonight is an important game because I don’t think anyone is going to go undefeated in district because our district is solid from top to bottom.
So, thinking that it’s all about winning at home and trying to steal some on the road, if we can do that I think we will be okay.”

For the Pirates to succeed they are going to need big plays from their starting point guard Devantae Davis.

Davis leads the team in assists and points.

The Pirates record stands at 8-11 overall and 0-1 in district play.

They also sit in the 47th spot in the most current power rankings.

Only the top 32 teams will make the playoffs.

The Kaplan Lady Pirates’ season hasn’t gone quite the way they had hoped it would, especially after losing its first three district games.

They hope to buck that trend as they too will take on West St. Mary.

If they are going to get a win in front of the home crowd they are going to need a good performance from their starters, in particular, Lauren Touchet, Caroline Touchet and Kendra Gums.

The Lady Pirates game is scheduled to start at 5:15 p.m. tonight.

The Pirates will follow right after the girls game is over.

Due to the fact that weather may play a factor on whether the kids go to school or not, there is a contingency plan.

If the game has to be cancelled tonight, the Lady Pirates game will be played tomorrow, and tip-off will take place at 2 p.m.

The Pirates will follow the Lady Pirates, but that is the plan just in case weather cancels the game tonight.
