Lady Wildcats blown away by Lady Canes

The Abbeville Lady Wildcats headed into the Friday match-up against North Central on a two game losing streak, and desperately needed to break that streak before district play begins on Wednesday.

Unfortunately for the Lady Wildcats they were not able to walk away with anything but a three game losing streak, losing 61-51, to North Central.

“North Central is a good team,” Head Coach Dean Dronet said. “I think we played some of our best basketball in the first three quarters and just couldn’t hold it together in the fourth.”

When the first quarter dust had settled nothing had changed. Both teams were still deadlocked.

Although this time instead of at 0-0 it was 15-15.

Christian Hackshaw scored six of the Lady Wildcats 15 points in the first quarter

The second quarter was all about the run.

In the beginning of the second quarter North Central went on a run that found them up by 12 at one point.

With about three minutes left in the second quarter, and down by 12, coach Dronet called a timeout.

After that timeout the Lady Wildcats went on a run of their own.

When everything was said and done in the second quarter North Central had a slight lead of 31-30 over the Lady Wildcats.

“I’m proud of the way our girls were able to fight back in the second quarter,” Dronet said.

The third quarter rolled around and at the end of it the Lady Wildcats saw the one point deficit turn into a three point deficit.

With only the fourth quarter remaining and down by three the Lady Wildcats needed to make something happen.

Too many mistakes would ultimately lead to the Lady Wildcats getting outscored 16-10 in the fourth quarter, and ultimately losing the game 61-51.

“We just made too many mistakes,” Dronet said. :You can’t do that against a good team. I think we wil be able to bounce back because we did play really well. Just need to eliminate some mistakes.”

Leading the way for the Lady Wildcats in scoring was Arrayia Starlard.

Starlard scored a team high 16 points.

Right behind Starlard was Jacqueline Braxton, who scored 13 points.

Seven of her 13 points came in the fourth quarter alone.

Bianca Levy, Jada Darby and Christina Hackshaw rounded out the scoring for the Lady Wildcats with nine, seven and six points respectively.

As mentioned before this was the third straight loss for the Lady Wildcats.

Their record now falls to 9-11.

The Lady Wildcats will open up district play on Wednesday as they will play host to the Kaplan Lady Pirates.
