A week to remember

This past week has been a crazy week for Vermilion Catholic head girls basketball coach Kim Guirdy.

Not only did the regular season get underway, but on Tuesday, to her surprise, the VC gym was named in her honor.

Now when you enter the basketball gym at VC, you are entering the Kim “Gidge” Guidry Gymnasium.

The gym was named after Guidry because of her years of service to the VC athletic and academic community.

“I was so surprised,” Guidry said. “I don’t know why they did that. I just coach basketball, I’m not the one running up and down the court. I was just doing my job.”

That is one of the most endearing things about coach Guidry, the simple fact that she is so humble.

It’s always someone else who deserves the achievement, and she never feels that she does.

Along with surprisingly having the gym named after her, Thursday night against the North Vermilion Lady Patriots, Gudiry and her Lady Eagles won by the final score of 49-29, for Guidry’s 700th win as a head coach.

The most impressive thing about the 700 wins in Guidry’s career is that they have all been with Vermilion Catholic.

“I am very pleased to have made it this far,” Guidry said. “It means I have done something right, but again the credit shouldn’t just go to me. It should go to all the students that have come through and played. They are just
as much a part of this as I am, more so if I’m being honest.”

On top of everything else that has happened for coach Guidry this week, she also celebrated her birthday.

This was definitely a week to remember for coach Guidry, but she won’t remember the week itself.

She will only remember the people that helped make it such a special week.

That’s the thing that makes coach Guidry such a special coach.
