VC softball team heading to Sulphur after 10 inning victory

The Vermilion Catholic Lady Eagles are heading to Sulphur for the first time in eight years.
The last time VC earned a trip to Sulphur to play in the Fastpitch 56 tournament was when most of the girls today were in the fourth grade.
VC beat St. John 6-5 in the bottom of the 10th inning on Saturday.
Bella Doucet, who had a single earlier in the game, stepped up to the plate with the bases load and no outs. She did not wait long to hit a line drive over second base that scored Kelsey Michel on third base.
“I felt confident at the plate,” said Bella about her final at bat. “I was not looking for any particular pitch. I just wanted to hit it. I did not want to go back in the outfield again.”
No. 7 VC will play No. 2 Cedar Creek on Friday at noon.
In the bottom of the 10th inning, VC played small ball.
Michel led off the inning with a walk and Ainsley Mallet placed a bunt down for a single and moved Michel over to second.
Cady Roberts did the same and reached first on a bunt-single that loaded the bases for Bella’s big hit.
The Lady Eagles were down 4-1 after the first two innings.
In the bottom of the third inning and two on base, VC’s Zanesia Bernard singled over first base that scored two runs and tied it 4-4.
St. John came right back and went ahead 5-4 in the top of the fifth inning.
VC battled back and tied it in the bottom of the sixth frame. Bernard tripled and Taylor Abshire scored her with a ground out.
“Perseverance paid off,” said VC coach Kim Guidry. “We were down 4-1 and battled back. That shows the girls’ character.”
Abshire pitched all 10 innings and got the victory for VC on the hill.
Mallet had two singles, while Ann Catherine Gallet had a single.
