VC pole vaulter sets new parish record
Bailey Broussard of VC goes straight up over the bar for a vault of 12 feet.
Vermilion Catholic senior Bailey Broussard has a lot to smile about these days.
On Friday, she pole vaulted a personal best 12-feet at this year’s Vermilion Parish track and field meet held in Erath. What she did not know up until about 30 minutes after her winning the pole vault was that her vault of 12 feet just became a new parish track meet record.
She broke VC’s Karley King nine-year-old parish record of 11-7.
“I did not know that,” said Broussard. “I am excited by hearing that.”
She also beat her personal best by four inches.
“I felt comfortable coming in today,” said Broussard. “My legs felt pretty good. I had feeling it may happen today. Everything lined up and felt good.”
She had jumped 12 feet before but only in practice and never at a meet. After clearing the record vault, Broussard attempted 12-4 but her pole was too small to go higher.
On Monday, Broussard will be signing a track and field scholarship with the UL Cajuns.
She selected UL because they offered her a better scholarship than Northwestern State.
“It has been a good month, said, Broussard, the defending Class A state title winner.
She has only been pole vaulting for 2 1/2 years, she said.
