VC has no trouble with first round opponent

Everyone knows the No. 2 seed Vermilion Catholic Eagles can score. Heck, they average something like 43 points a game. But what few know is that the Eagles also have a solid defense .
While the offense did its job and put up 40 points on the board in the 40-8 win over Covenant Christian Lions in the first round of the Division IV playoffs, the defense also did its job and held the Lions out of the end zone for three quarters.
VC will play at home Friday, against Delhi Charter. Delhi beat Westminster 19-14.
The winner of that game plays the winner of Central Catholic and Southern Lab game.
VC’s Andre Girouard moved to defensive end to start the game and had the best game of his senior year.
“This is probably the best game I ever played,” said Girouard. “I did what I had to do and did not worry about anything except what I had to do. I was having fun.”
With a 40-0 lead at halftime, Girouard switched to outside linebacker, taking Hunter Frith’s place.
Another person having fun making tackles was linebacker William Noegel. Noegel, who leads the team in tackles with more than 100, had his share on Friday.
Entering the game, Noegel said the team was not too worried about being able to score on the Lions. About the only worry they had was if the Eagle defense was going to stop the Lions’ Wing-T offense. After the first quarter, everyone in the stands knew that answer.
“This is a good feeling to get that first win out of the way. It is always good to put it in the books,” said Noegel.
The Eagles scored their first touchdown with 3:24 to play in the first period. Quarterback Hunter Frith connected with Emile Trahan on a 68-yard pass that went for a touchdown. He nailed the extra point and the blow out was underway.
Frith threw another touchdown pass to Tyler Derouen that went for 48 yards. Still in the same quarter, Frith connected with Devren Constantine for an 82-yard pass. Constantine caught the pass in the middle of the field between two defenders, who then ran into each other. Constantine outran the other Lions’ defenders.
The Eagles opened the second half and marched 54 yards. The big play on the drive was a fake punt that Emile ran 30 yards for a first down.
On the next play, Kalix Broussard turned a screen play into a 21-yard gain, down to the 1-yard line. Then, Noegel ran in for the score, making it 26-0.
After that score, the second and third team for the Eagles finished the game.
Frith completed 50 percent of his passes (9-out-of-18) for 253 yards and three touchdowns.
Kalix Broussard had six totes for 24 yards.
Tyler Derouen added three carries for 29 yards.
Derouen also had thee catches for 65 yards, while Emile also had three catches for 70 yards.
Constantine had two catches for 97 yards.
Covenant Christian Head Coach Randy Bouquet was not surprised how good the Eagles are.
“VC was ranked pretty high,” said Bonquet. “When you are at the bottom of the bracket, and you got to go play the top of the bracket, sometimes this kind of game happens. All of the credit goes to VC. They have an outstanding football team. They did a great job.”
