VC Eagles win by razor thin margin

The VC Eagles faced off against Highland Baptist Tuesday night, and for most of the game, trailed.

The Eagles were able were able to pull out the win with a 52-51 win over Highland Baptist, thanks in large part to a good end of the third quarter and a big fourth quarter

“It’s good to pull off victory, especially a close victory,” Eagles Head Coach Roch Charpentier said. “We were able to start playing the speed that we like to play at. Along, with getting up to speed we were able to force a few turnovers and just start
knocking down our shots.

“Also, when we get to playing at the speed we like, it forces the other team to play a little faster, and that helps us play defense a little better defense.

The Eagles were losing at the end of the first, second and only up by two at the end of the third quarter, but despite all that, were able to open up a lead in the fourth quarter that got as big as 10 points.

Even with the 10 point lead the Eagles, through some costly turnovers, lost most of that lead with less than 2:30 left on the clock.

Despite allowing Highland Baptist to close to within one point, the Eagles were able to make some clutch free throws in the last minute to hold off Highland Baptist for the 52-51 victory.

The Eagles fourth quarter would end up being one of the largest scoring outputs in one quarter the Eagles have had all season long.

They would score 20 points in the final quarter.

“In the last three minutes, we just turned it over too many times,” Charpentier said. “Despite it coming down to the wire, we played a good game and I’m proud of the effort. It is always nice to get a victory.”

Free throws are the part of the Eagles’ game that saved them tonight.

The Eagles would shoot 71 percent from the free throw line, making 22 of the 32 free throws they attempted.

Leading the way in scoring for the Eagles was Brennan Gallet who scored a team and game high 23 points. Drake Broussard was next in line for the Eagles as he scored 10 points.

Shay LaPorte and Mike Campbell were able to help the Eagles out by scoring six and five points apiece.

Connor Menard and Chris Campbell rounded out the scoring for the Eagles by each scoring four points.

The Eagles will be on the court again this Thursday night as they travel to take on the Delcambre Panthers in Delcambre.

The game is scheduled to star at 5:15 p.m.
