Sophomore guard sparks Erath rally with 14 points

BALDWIN - The Erath Lady Bobcats managed to pull away in the second half thanks to a sophomore point guard that plays like a senior.

Erath won 32-24 to improve to improve to 3-1 in district and 11-9 overall.

Sophomore guard Gabby Harrington had to sit on the bench at the 3:21 mark in the first period because she picked up her third foul.

When she sat, Erath was down 8-2 and had not made a two-point basket. The Lady Bobcats finally made their first two-pointer but they were still down 13-5 with 9:40 to play in the second period.

To make matters worst, Erath High’s back up point guard (Ashley Dubois) had a soccer game 25 miles away and could not fill in. Her and --- Richardelle made it to the basketball game at halftime.

Erath head coach Andrea Bernard called on her bench to answer in the final 10 minutes of the second period. The Lady Bobcats went on a 10-0 run on five inside points by Alexis Harrington.

Erath crawled back in it at half and tied it 13-13.

“I was OK to be tied,” said Bernard. “I had to pull some girls off the bench who have not seen varsity in a while, and they did exactly what we asked them to do.”

After sitting for almost the entire first and did not score a point, Harrington took over the second half.

Harrington nailed two 3-pointers to put EHS up 19-18 at the four-minute mark.

She made two driving layups in the final 90 seconds to put EHS up 25-20 after three quarters. Harrington scored 10 of Erath’s 12 points that quarter.

The Lady Bobcats never fell behind again.

Harrington finished the game scoring 14 points to lead all scorers.

“Gabby is my coach on the floor,” Bernard said. “If she is in foul trouble, it makes a huge difference that early in the game.

“When she came into the game in the second half, she handled her self very well. She played like Gabby - like she knows how to play.”

Other scorers for EHS were Ashlen Lege (4), Alexa Faulk (3), Caitlyn Domingues (2) and Alexis Lege (2).

Erath girls were back in action Saturday against Notre Dame on the road. It was a make-up district game from last week.
