Pirates pull out win in OT

KAPLAN - The Kaplan Pirates needed overtime, but managed to earn a 64-56 victory over the West St. Mary Wolfpack in District 6-3A action Saturday at B.J. Bordelon Gym.

Kaplan’s first district win of the season nearly slipped away late in the fourth quarter. With 16.3 seconds left and the Pirates clinging to a 53-51 lead, WSM’s David Robertson drove the ball across half court to the top of the key.

Just before the ball left his hands, the whistle blew. Robertson’s shot ripped the net and would have put WSM ahead 54-51 with 10 seconds remaining. However, WSM called and was granted a timeout just before the shot.

After the timeout, WSM’s Travis Jones drove into the lane and made a circus-layup, plus drew a foul with only 6 seconds left on the clock. With the game tied, Jones missed the free throw. Kaplan secured the rebound and regulation ended knotted at 53.

“Overall, we shot free throws well,” said Kaplan head coach Jeff Davis. “But we didn’t make them at the end of the game. If we make our free throws down the stretch, there is no overtime.”

Kaplan finished the game 17-25 from the charity stripe, including 7-10 in the overtime period. However, the Pirates only made 3-6 in the final quarter.

Blake Touchet led four Pirates in double figures with a game-high 20 points. He also recorded three assists, including an off-the-backboard alley-oop pass to Jalen Bates for the slam that electrified the crowd.

Devante Davis scored 13 points, grabbed seven boards and dished out three assists. He also went 4-4 from the free throw line in overtime. Darius Jordan added 12 points and five rebounds. Kaylon Rudd scored 10 and recorded a double-double by
collecting a game-high 11 rebounds.

After missing all but about four minutes of the first half due to foul trouble, Bates just missed a double-double of his own. He scored nine points, had 10 rebounds and swatted four WSM shots, all in the second half.

“Jalen played with confidence on offense in the second half,” said Davis. “That really opened up everything for everyone else. Defensively, he took away their second shot opportunities. He played really, really well.”

Robertson and Jones each scored 15 for WSM. Robertson made five of WSM’s 11 3-point baskets.

“It was a big win for us, especially after Tuesday’s loss,” said Davis. “It’s much better to be 1-1 than 0-2 in district.”

Kaplan travels to Erath Tuesday for another District 6-3A contest against the Bobcats.

KAPLAN - The Kaplan Lady Pirates squandered a halftime lead and lost to the West St. Mary Wolfpack 34-46 Saturday in District 6-3A play at B.J. Bordelon Gym.

After a 12-12 draw in the opening quarter, Kaplan outscored WSM 10-6 in the second to claim a 22-18 lead at the break.

In the second half WSM’s Jakyrin Connor drained four 3-pointers and Amber Joe scored eight of her game-high 18 points to lead WSM to the come-from-behind victory. Connor finished with 14 points.

“We led the entire game,” said Lady Pirates head coach Courtney Hargrave. “Then No. 5 started hitting threes and they got ahead. We couldn’t buy a layup in the fourth quarter.”

Kailey LeJeune led Kaplan with 11 points. The Touchet sisters, Caroline and Lauren, each scored eight. Kendra Gums added six points.

District 6-3A play continues Tuesday as the Lady Pirates travel to Erath to challenge the Lady Bobcats.
