North Vermilion takes care of VC boys

It’s not very often that a win or a loss can be pinned to one quarter in a basketball game.
Usually it is the collective effort of each and every minute that makes the difference in a basketball game, but for the game between the North Vermilion Patriots and the Vermilion Catholic Eagles, the third quarter is where this game was won for the Patriots and lost for the Eagles.
The Patriots were able to get the win, running away, by the final score of 62-36.
“We got off to out normal slow start,” Patriots Head Coach Jack LeBlanc said. “It’s the fourth or fifth time we have come out and had a slow start, and then played well in the second half. I’m proud of the team for the way they battled in the first half and then made the corrections to play so well in the second. We just have to fix our first halves.”
The first quarter was a back and forth affair. If one team would score the other would go down and score on the very next possession.
The score at the end of the first quarter was tied at 9-9.
The second quarter the Patriots kind of woke up early on in the quarter.
Thanks in part to a couple of early turnovers by the Eagles, the Patriots would find themselves up 22-11 with less than four minutes remaining in the second quarter.
From that point on it was all Eagles in the second quarter.
The Eagles would finish off the second quarter on a 9-1 run, that resulted in the halftime score being 23-20, Patriots.
Then the third quarter came, and it was a combination of VC not being able to make a bucket and NV not missing.
The Patriots offense would come alive in the third quarter.
They would end up scoring 23 points in the third quarter.
Thanks in large part to Mike Bessard, who would score nine of is game high 15 points in the third quarter alone.
The defense for the Patriots also stepped up their game and only allowed VC to score five points.
When the fourth quarter ended, the Patriots ended up winning by 28 points, 62-36.
“We came out in the third quarter and just didn’t have our legs,” VC Head Coach Roch Charpentier said. “I’m proud of the way the boys battled back in the second quarter. We were down 11 and was able to bring it back to three. We just need to get everybody in basketball shape.”
Leading the way in scoring for the Patriots was Mike Bessard who scored a team-and-game high 15 points.
Donald Comeaux was not far behind with 12 points..
Jordan Windmon, Tre Levy and Dade Dieterich got in on the scoring action with eight, seven and six, respectively.
The leading scorer for the Eagles was Shay LaPorte, who scored a team-high 10 points.
Drake Broussard was next in line as he added seven to the final tally.
Mike Campbell and Brennan Gallet each added five apiece.
