LHSAA confirms football split to stay

The LHSAA has confirmed that the select, non-select split for the high school football playoffs, was voted by the principals of Louisiana high schools to stay intact for at least one more year.

“I wish that it wasn’t split,” Vermilion Catholic Head Coach Russel Kuhns said. “They voted for it to be split, so it is what it is.”

The individual classes, 5A through 1A, had the opportunity to annul the split and go back to the playoff system of old.

Instead, each class decided to stick with the select, non-select playoff split.

5A and 4A were the two that were thought closest to switch back to the old playoff systems, but thanks to a 33 to 24 vote in 5A and a 25 to 26 vote in 4A, they are sticking with the split.

In class 3A through 1A the vote was a lot more lopsided.

In class 3A the vote was 3 to 12.

Class 2A had the largest discrepancy with the vote being vote was 34 to 7.

Class 1A rounded out the voting with a 24 to 8 vote to keep the playoff split.

This vote being announced means that the playoffs will once again this next football season be split into nine different divisions.

The LHSAA will reconvene next year to discuss this topic again.
