Kaplan keeps it simple for Eunice scrimmage

KAPLAN - The Kaplan Pirates did not do anything fancy against the Eunice Bobcats in Friday’s scrimmage.
The first team, being run by junior quarterback Daniel Lotief because starter Jade Herpin is out for a week or two with a broken hand, did what they do best. They ran the football 90 percent of the time on their 12-play series.
Kaplan head coach Stephen Lotief did not have a complicated game plan coming into the scrimmage.
“We just wanted to hit someone different,” said Lotief. “We will go back and watch film to see who did what. I thought we played well.”
The Kaplan first-team offense did not score, but it did manage to move the ball down field against Eunice’s number number-one defense.
It took a little while for the first offense to get started but once they did, the only ones stopping them were themselves.
Grant Frick had three runs that totaled 15 yards. Julius Johnson showed he still had speed and power and had four carries for 31 yards. His longest carry was a 13-yard run up the middle.
Lotief was 1 of 3 passing the ball for five yards. He completed a slant pass to Frick.
Kaplan’s first defense shut down the Eunice running game. Eunice did have success throwing the football.
Coming up with big tackles for Kaplan’s first string were Jaise Meche, Payton Gaspard, Jerrick Romero, D’ Angelo Martin and John Broussard.
Eunice did not score on Kaplan’s first team defense.
Kaplan’s second offense played well behind quarterback Judd Bertrand. Bertrand, a sophomore, had an 11-yard run and completed a 23-yard pass to Chris Broussard.
Ridge Herpin and Chris Broussard carried the pigskin for the second team.
Kaplan’s third offense was run by freshman quarterback Dylan Case. Tyler Stelly, Drake Abshire, Braylon Romero and Matt Rhoden took turns carrying the football.
The Pirates will be back in action Friday in the Vermilion Parish Jamboree. Kaplan takes on district foe Erath, startng at 7 p.m.
