Gueydan ready for South Lab

No. 9 seed Gueydan Honeybears are moving on the second round of the Class A playoffs after holding off the Grambling Lady Tigers, 53-47, in overtime.
Next up for the Honeybears is a trip to Baton Rouge to battle the No. 8 Southern Lab Kittens. The Kittens nipped No. 25 seed Central Catholic, 29-18, in the first round. It was only 11-8 at halftime.
The second round game will be played in the Southern University Coliseum on Monday. Tip off is 6 p.m.
Gueydan head coach Randall Bertrand has a game plan against Southern Lab.
“We are going to take what they give us,” he said. “I am confident if we slow it down, we have a good chance.”
Bertrand said he was not too worried about playing in a larger coliseum.
In the win on Thursday, Ke’Ara Charles sparked Gueydan late in the second half. In the first half, she had no points. In the second half, counting the overtime, she finished with 15 points.
She scored 8 out of Gueydan’s 14 overtime points. In the fourth quarter and overtime, Charles was 8 out of 11 at the free throw line.
Gueydan was 18 out of 22 from the charity stripe in the game.
The Honeybears outscored Grambling 14-6 in overtime.
Another player who had a great game was GHS freshman Kendry Guidry. In only her second start, she finished with 14 points.
Senior Nya Boudreaux, who scored 21 last week, had 10 points. She was four for five at the free throw line.
