Getting Serious: Vermilion Catholic Lady Eagles have to travel to Homer

Things just got serious for the Vermilion Catholic Lady Eagles.
The Lady Eagles took care of business on Wednesday, beating St. Ed’s of Eunice with ease in the first round.
The second round just got a little tougher.
No. 5 seed VC now has to travel four and a half hours to play No. 21 Homer (12-11), who upset No. 12 Basile, 54-40, in Basile.
Homer is only a few miles away from the Arkansas boarder.
The Lady Eagles will leave Abbeville around 9 a.m. on Monday. Game time is at 6 p.m.
Homer is on a six-game winning streak and averaging 53 points in the last six victories.
Vermilion Catholic head coach Kim Guidry and assistant coach Angela Gallet traveled to the Basile/Homer game on Thursday to scout. They thought they were going to look at Basile. But that changed when Basile’s two best guards fouled out and Homer made a large come back in the fourth period. They pressed Basile and converted the turnovers into points. Homer outscored Basile 28-5 in the fourth period to steal a victory.
“They are very athletic,” said Guidry. “They like to run the floor. It is almost like a track meet.”
Homer, she said, likes to score inside. They have very little outside shooting, she added.
That’s a good thing because VC packs a one-two punch with Bella Doucet and Meredith Stutes near the goal.
When a shot goes up for either team, look for Homer to crash the boards on offense and defense. While Homer is not taller than VC, they can out-jump them.
Homer has eight players who are on the bench, including a 6-0 foot player.
“We are going to go there and worry about our task, defend and then get back as fast as we can on defense,” she added. “We can’t let anyone score easy. If we do all that, then we have a chance.”
The winner of Monday’s game gets the winner of No. 5 Montgomery/No. 13 Kentwood game.
If VC wins and Montgomery wins, VC will play at home in the next round.
The projected starters for VC are Jay Demouchet and Lea Camel, who are the guards; Kelly White and Bella Doucet are the forwards and Stutes is under the goal.
