Erath beats Abbeville 12-0 in jamboree

The Vermilion Parish Football Jamboree was a chance for coaches to see what things need to be tweaked before their first game next week.
Abbeville High Defensive Coordinator Kevin Kern and Erath head coach David Comeaux got a chance to see the good and bad in Erath’s 12-0 win over Abbeville.
The good thing for Erath was the performance of UL commitment Elijah Mitchell. Mitchell finished the game with seven carries for 150 yards and he scored twice. He had a 60-yard TD run and a 32-yard TD touchdown run.
His 60-yard TD scamper came on his first carry.
He also had two touchdown runs called back. One went for 52 yards and other looked to be 44 yards. Both were cancelled because of penalties.
After the Mitchell’s 150 yards, Erath had little offense. They had less than 60 yards rushing and no yards in the passing department.
Because of that, Erath head coach David Comeaux said there is still work that needs to be done.
“I saw good things and bad things,” said Comeaux. “Our offensive line did a good job coming off the ball. They created holes for Elijah.”
The Bobcats led 12-0 in the first half, but their offense stalled in the second half.
“We did not play well in the second half,” Comeaux added. “This jamboree is a good teaching lesson for our team. We are going to go back and fix things that need fixing.”
On the other hand, the Wildcats showed signs of promise.
On their opening drive, they marched the ball down to the Erath 30 yards and stalled. In the drive, AHS quarterback Demarcus Collins mixed up the play calling with run and pass. On the first play, he scampered for 17 yards.
He also connected with Allen Arclies for a five-yard pass.
However, Erath’s defense rose to the occasion. Erath defensive end J.P. Touchet sacked Collins on fourth down to kill the drive.
Collins would lead Abbeville rushing with 54 yards. He also had three completions for 48 yards.
Fullback Jalan Montgomery had 20 yards on five totes. Others with carries were Braden Williams and Tavian Menard, who combined for 53 yards.
Kern, who is filling in for head coach Gary Atkins, said not having a scrimmage game last week, put his team behind this week.
“We played flat in the first half but we also did not have a scrimmage game last week,” said Kern. “The first half I thought we could have done better at things. We challenged them at halftime, and I thought we played great in the second half. I could not have asked for better. The kids did well in the second half.”
