Abbeville High's Travin Moore to be inducted into Abbeville High Hall of Fame

One of the best athletes to ever play at Abbeville High will be honored Thursday night at Vermilion Oaks.
Travin S. Moore, a 2000 AHS graduate, will be inducted into the Abbeville High Hall of Fame.
The induction ceremony will take place Thursday night at Vermilion Oaks.
The next night, at halftime of the Abbeville High football game, he will be honored.Travin’s football performance in high school and college almost never happened due to his mother. He never played youth football because his mother feared he would be injured.
While family members went to football practice, Travin sat with his mom on the porch and watched them leave.
It wasn’t until Travin attended J. H. Williams Middle School that he began participating in band, football, basketball and track. It was then that Travin fell in love with organized school events.
In high school he excelled at every sport he played.

At AHS, Travin received honors in sports and in the band. During his freshman year, he participated in all sports. It was at this time that Travin decided to discontinue his football career so he could concentrate on band.
Upon informing Coach Brent Indest of his decision, Travin and his mentor, Coach Indest, traveled to Travin’s home for a meeting with his mother. Coach Indest was able to convince them that he saw potential in Travin, and just like that, Travin was back on the team.
Travin credits Coach Indest along with assistant coaches Coach Gaspard, Coach Sturgin, Coach Gonzales and Coach Carol, for not only being coaches, but mentors through his high school years.
During his junior year, Travin was selected to the Abbeville Meridional All Parish Football Team. Travin made the first team offense as a running back and second team defense as a defensive back.
In district, Travin also earned honors for his play on the field, where he was selected to the All District 7-3A Football First Team Offense and Defense, as a running back and defensive back, respectively.
In track and field during his junior year, Travin won the 110 high hurdles, high jump and triple jump at the district meet. He placed first in the 110-meter hurdles at State with a time of 14.39 seconds.
Travin became the second person in 20 years to win a high hurdles state title from Abbeville High. The first was 1992 AHS Hall of Fame Inductee Bill Gooch Jr. Also that spring, Travin had his personal best high jump of 6’ 11” at a track meet held at New Iberia Senior High School.
During his senior year, Travin decided to forgo band and concentrate on his football skills due to several collegiate teams showing great interest in him. Though Travin ran for 1,200 yards in regular season, this accomplishment will never diminish the heartbreaking loss the team suffered against John Curtis in the semi-finals of his senior year.
Travin’s accomplishments on the football field earned him a spot on the 5-4A All District First Team Offensive and Defensive units.
Travin’s most notable accolade from his senior year consisted of making the Class 4-A All State Football Team as an athlete. On the parish level, Travin was selected to the Abbeville Meridional All Parish First Team Offense and was named as the Most Valuable Player on Offense.
Travin finished his high school football year with 68 total tackles, 40 being solo and five interceptions. Travin was also on the cover of the Louisiana Football Magazine and his play earned him Acadiana Player of the Week one week during the regular season.

In track and field, Travin’s senior year accolades continued as he took second place at the indoor state track meet in Baton Rouge in the 55 meter high hurdles.
During the spring, Travin placed first at the parish and district meets in the high jump, 110 meter hurdles and the triple jump. Travin went on to place second in the hurdles at the state track meet held at Bernie Moore Track Stadium. Finally, to conclude his senior year.
Travin was selected as the 2000 AHS Male Athlete of the year.

Upon completion of his high school career, it was time for Travin to attend the University of Louisiana at Monroe. Travin started three of his four years for the Indians, which has been renamed the Warhawks. He received player of the week and the “HIT STICK”, which is for hitting a player in the game with a league hard hit. Travin finished his football career in 2004 with 192 total tackles with 107 being solo, 1 interception, 5 sacks and a fumble recovery.
He graduated from ULM in May of 2005. Travin returned home and is employed by the Vermilion Parish Sheriff Department where he holds the title of Lieutenant.
Travin S. Moore was born in Lafayette, Louisiana on April 27, 1981. The sixth child of Larry Moore, Sr. and July Levy, Travin has two brothers, James Moore, Sr., Larry Moore, Jr. and four sisters, Terrilyn Nunez, Pamela Moore, Kamesha Scott and Latash Fletcher. Travin is married to Starya Moore and they are the proud parents of two children, Travin K. Moore, age 11 and Marley Moore, age 9.
