Abbeville head football coach satisfied with scrimmage

Abbeville Head Football Coach Gary Adkins was able to see that the 2015 Wildcats are slowly learning their new offense but there is still work that needs to be done.
Adkins, in his first year, and the Wildcats scrimmaged Ascension Catholic, a Class A school from Lafayette. The game was played at Clark Field on artificial turf.
He was able to see every player play during the scrimmage.
Adkins has only been the AHS head coach for the last three weeks. The Wildcats have had to rush and learn the offense.
In the scrimmage, the head coach was able to see how well the players have picked up the new offense.
“We still have a long way to go,” he said on Friday. “I saw some things where we have gotten better and other things we need to work on.”
The Wildcats did manage to put together a 70-yard drive and when they got in the red zone (inside the 20 yard line), they scored in two plays.
The AHS defense gave up a couple of big plays that resulted in to scores.
“This was a typical scrimmage,” he said. “The good thing about a scrimmage is that we can correct the things we did wrong. It is all correctable.”
Running the offense at the quarterback position was Demarcus Collins. Adkins was happy with his QB but he is still learning the offense.
The new head coach also got to see his new offensive line perform. With only one returner, this year’s O-Line has three new starting sophomores and two seniors.
The young line, which averages 6-foot-3 inches tall and 240 pounds, is also still in the learning process, he said.
This week the Wildcats’ coaches will try to correct the mistakes they saw Thursday night.
Abbeville is playing host to the Parish Jamboree on Friday. The cost to enter the jamboree is $10.
Here is the jamboree lineup.
