Wallace Paul Broussard
A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at St. Alphonsus Catholic church in Maurice, Louisiana, for Wallace Paul Broussard, age 91, on Wednesday, August 12, 2015, at 10 am. Reverend O. Joseph Breaux, Pastor of St. Alphonsus Church is the celebrant of the Mass, assisted by Deacon Tim Maragos. Wallace died peacefully, surrounded by family and friends, at his home on August 10th. His burial will take place in the St. Alphonsus Mausoleum.
Wallace, a resident of Maurice, was the son of the late Jean Camille Broussard and the former Ada Hebert.
Wallace is survived by his wife of 65 years, Doris Comeaux Broussard, his four children, Debbie and her husband Paul Choate; Kim and his wife Cheryl Thibodeaux; Cheryl and her husband Louis Perret; Todd and his wife Donna Lally; 9 grandchildren, 2 step grandchildren, and 2 great grandchildren; 4 siblings: Gladys Trahan, Alice Schroder, Willie Broussard and Faye Prejean.
Wallace was preceded in death by his parents and 5 siblings: Edward Broussard, Doris Dartez, Dr. Lastie Broussard, John Broussard, Walter Broussard, and granddaughter, Ainsley Broussard.
A native of Maurice, Wallace received all Holy Sacraments at St. Alphonsus where he served as an altar server, choir member and hospitality minister. He graduated from Maurice High School and Southwestern Louisiana Institute with a degree in Education. He was an accomplished high school coach and civics/history teacher at both E. Broussard and Indian Bayou, the latter where he also served as Assistant Principal. In his youth, Wallace was a member of the Boy Scouts of America, enjoyed gymnastics, and was a star basketball player and athlete.
Wallace served his country during World War II in the United States Air Corp. He enjoyed the political arena and ran for mayor of Maurice challenging the traditional practice of mayoral appointments. He was instrumental in the establishment of the Maurice Volunteer Fire Department. He enjoyed duck and dove hunting, gardening, collecting local historical artifacts and promoting the Acadian Culture. He was a lifetime member of the Famille Beausoleil Association and in 2014 received the Acadian Memorial’s Living Legend Award. Having lost his father at age 13, Wallace treasured until his death, the closeness that he and his nine siblings shared and the time they spent together as an extended family for 91 years.
The family requests that visiting hours be observed at the Maurice location of Delhomme Funeral Home on Tuesday, August 11, 2015, from 3:00 pm to 9:00 pm. A rosary will be recited at 7:00 pm on Tuesday evening by Deacon Tim Maragos and Madelyn Broussard Maragos.
Pallbearers will be Kim Broussard, Todd Broussard, Paul Choate, Louis Perret, Tyler Choate and Brody Broussard. Faith C. Roy, Tristen B. Fitzgerald, Annie Perret, Jency Broussard and Max Perret will serve as eulogist, ministers of the word, ministers of communion and altar server, respectively. George and Janell Comeaux will present the gifts. Karen Broussard, vocalist, will sing beautiful old, Catholic and French hymms.
A reception will immediately follow the funeral services at the church hall.
