Irby, a life long resident of Abbeville, Louisiana, shared his love for his family with numerous others who knew him or came into contact with him. His love for the game of baseball, especially youth baseball, afforded him the opportunity to coach, mentor, and shape many young boys through his roles as coach, umpire, league official, and casual observer at games played throughout the state. People who knew him could count on seeing him at the ballpark most days seated in his folding chair as near to home plate as possible.
Many times parents of children that benefitted from Irby’s involvement in youth baseball programs would thank him for his positive impact on their children.
Later in life, Irby was recognized both locally and nationally for his contributions to youth baseball with a ball field named after him in Abbeville to being inducted into Babe Ruth Baseball’s National Hall of Fame.
Over the last four years, the family established the Irby J. Luquette scholarship program in the Babe Ruth League, an honorarium that provides college tuition to underprivileged high school students who exemplify the character and work ethic that Irby exemplified himself.
Irby is survived by his wife of 70 years, Wanda Marie Bouligny Luquette, sister Florine Meaux of Abbeville, and children Ronnie and wife Kate of Houston, Texas, Cynthia Luquette Lewis and husband Harris of Abbeville, Karen Luquette Prejean and husband Barney of Abbeville, Gary and his wife Brenda of Houston, Texas, Anne Luquette of Abbeville, Mary Luquette Boroughs and husband David of Houston, Texas, sixteen grandchildren, and sixteen great grandchildren.
