Abbeville man tries to stab officer during arrest

An Abbeville Police Officer avoided injury and made a successful arrest after a man tried to stab him with a pair of scissors.
Clarence Mitchell Jr., 55, of Abbeville faces multiple charges as a result of the incident.
Abbeville Police responded on Feb. 7 to a call of a subject causing a disturbance at the CVS Pharmacy on Veterans Memorial Drive.
“He was using profane language,” Abbeville Police Lt. David Hardy said. “He was inside the store.”
When officers arrived inside the store, they observed Mitchell allegedly committing a theft.
As officers tried to make an arrest, Mitchell reportedly grabbed a pair of scissors and attempted to strike one of the officers. The attempt proved unsuccessful.
“He missed and officers were eventually able to subdue him,” Hardy said. “He did make threats toward the officers.”
Officers reportedly found items on Mitchell, including a crack cocaine pipe.
Police booked Mitchell for Misdemeanor Theft of Goods, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, Disturbing the Peace by Loud and Profane Language, Misrepresentation During Booking, Resisting an Officer with Force or Violence, Illegal Carrying of Weapons, Aggravated Battery and Threatening a Public Official.
This is not the first time Mitchell, who is a convicted felon, has had an incident with Abbeville Police, including a previous charge of resisting an officer.
“He has an extensive history with us,” Hardy said.
