Abbeville High’s Blake Broussard named Parish High School Student of the Year

Combine Abbeville High senior Blake Broussard’s résumé with his genuine enthusiasm for all the school has to offer, and its easy to see why he has been named the Vermilion Parish High School Student of the Year.
The Vermilion Parish School Board announced Broussard as the winner last week.
“It’s a good feeling,” Broussard said Tuesday morning with a big smile on his face. “It’s definitely an honor.”
And a little surprising, he admitted.
“There are so many great students out there,” Broussard said. “I kind of expected a student at another school to get it.
“It’s been a long time since an Abbeville High student has won it.”
As much as the award is a personal achievement, Broussard said he is happy to bring it home to Abbeville High.
“I feel like this is definitely for the school,” Broussard said. “It’s good to show the good stuff that is going on here.”
With that said, the award is a personal achievement. Broussard helped himself by his efforts in school. He holds a 4.0 GPA, is a member of the student council and is the senior class president. Broussard is also a member of 4-H, the Beta Club, a Freshmen Team Leader and a member of the Pro-Start team, which takes part in cooking competitions.
Broussard said there is a certain personal quality that helped push him en route to winning.
“I have always gone out of my way to do as much as I can for my school and community,” Broussard said. “I have always focused on leadership. I feel that has led me to want to do more and help people.”
Abbeville High Principal Ivy Landry vouched for that quality.
“Blake Broussard is a great leader who works to make Abbeville High the best place it can be,” Landry said. “He is a great student inside and outside the walls of Abbeville High School.”
Broussard has plans for when he leaves the walls of Abbeville High for good. Those plans include majoring in architecture at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette.
“I would like a minor in interior design,” Broussard added. “I would like to go into residential house planning. I have always wanted to help people make their dream homes.
“I feel like that is a great way to help people.”
Broussard is always singing a happy, helpful tune. Often times that is literally the case. Broussard has been a member of the choir organization, Louisiana Kids. It was with the group that Broussard sang along with local star, Koryn Hawthorne, a finalist on NBC’s “The Voice” in 2015.
“Koryn got me started in the organization my freshman year,” Broussard said. “We sang a duet that year.”
Broussard said he has thought about trying out for shows like “The Voice.”
“I don’t want to lose everything that I have done in school,” Broussard said. “I didn’t want to stop what I was building for college. Trying to go on a show like that is demanding. It would be kind of scary to jump into something like that while I am in school.
“I love to sing and after college, I can maybe give it a shot.”
Broussard has given high school his best shot. The return has obviously paid tremendous dividends.
“I am enjoying it,” Broussard said. “I think I have made the most out of high school and I plan to make the most of what’s left of my senior year.
“I feel like it has gone well.”
