North Vermilion’s Shelbi Picard named Kiwanis Student of Month
Shelbi Picard set a pair of goals during the course for her high school career.
Picard, a senior at North Vermilion High School, shared those goals Tuesday afternoon with the Abbeville Kiwanis Club. The group invited Picard to its weekly meeting to present her with the Student of the Month honor.
“My goal in high school has always been to learn as much as I can and to make a name for myself,” Picard told the Kiwanis members.
As for the learning, that consisted of more than what took place in the classroom.
“When I say learn as much as I possibly can,” Picard explained, “I mean that outside of books.”
That learning has occurred in the various clubs to which Picard is a member. She said the 4-H Club has taught her responsibility, how to speak publicly and to properly interview. Through the Beta Club, Picard said she has learned about being a good citizen and helping in the community. The Fellowship of Christian Athletes has helped strengthen Picard’s faith.
“Through all of those clubs,” she said, “I have met so many people from all over the country.”
Picard said she would advise younger students to be involved in clubs.
“Those clubs have definitely been a highlight of high school,” Picard said. “I think that if you go through high school and just sit in class, you don’t learn as much.
“In high school, it’s all about being involved.”
Picard, who is the senior class president, has certainly learned while in the classroom. She holds a 3.9 GPA and scored in the 30s on the ACT.
“My other ambition has been to make a name for myself,” Picard said of her other goal. “I want to set an example, to be someone who students can look up to.”
North Vermilion Principal Tommy Byler said he feels Picard has made a mark on the school.
“She is a well-rounded student,” Byler said. “She is one of those students who is very, very involved in different organizations.
“It’s an honor to have her as a student.”
Picard thanked Byler for helping her find her way as a high school student.
“When I was a freshmen, I was kind of lost,” Picard said. “All of a sudden Coach Byler came around and helped me become a well-rounded student.”
Picard also thanked two special people for what they have done for her.
“My parents (Jason and Rose Picard) have definitely helped me. If I fail, they are always there to support me.”
