Three Vermilion Parish High Schools get Bronze rating
Three high schools in Vermilion Parish have a reason to smile this morning after receiving word that they received a bronze ranking from U.S. News and World Report as part of the publication’s annual list of the nation’s best high schools.
Three of the four high schools from Acadiana, who received the bronze rankings are from Vermilion Parish.
The schools are Abbeville High, Erath High and Gueydan High.
The only school from Lafayette Parish to receive the bronze medal was Early College Academy.
According to the U.S. News and World Report, bronze medals are given to “high performing schools based on state exam performance.” All three parish schools have math and english proficiency rates that are higher than the Louisiana average, said the study.
Abbeville High School Principal Ivy Landry said the award was a team effort at AHS.
“The award shows how hard our teachers and students worked year round to be successful. As we always say, “It is a great day to be a wildcat.”
Landry said awards like this shows Abbeville High students that anything is possible when, “you work hard.”
“This is a team Wildcat Award. It is nice to show everyone in the state what AHS is all about,” said Landry.
Erath Principal Mark Turner said, “Erath High is so proud to receive this acknowledgement. I am extremely grateful of the hard work from the faculty, students and community that continually pays off.”
No Vermilion Parish schools ranked in the top nine. Benjamin Franklin High School in New Orleans was ranked No. 1.
Louisiana has four gold medal schools, five silver medal schools and 81 bronze medal schools.
“We are excited to share this news with Abbeville and Gueydan as we showcase our district as a whole,” Turner said.
