Andrus Cattle Festival Farmer of 2015
John K. Andrus of Maurice is the 2015 Cattle Festival Cattleman of the Year.
The Cattle Festival is Oct. 10 and Andrus will be honored at the banquet the week of the festival.
John grew up on a farm milking cows and tending to his family’s herd.
After graduating from Vermilion Catholic in 1974, he entered the oilfield as a diesel mechanic, for a major oil company, and worked for 24 years. During this time his cattle program was only a small operation.
After the birth of his three sons Josh, Jarrod and Jake his cattle operation evolved into Triple J Farms Registered Brahman and F1 producing cattle herd.
He enjoyed 20 years of showing cattle from local to national shows across the nation. His mark of accomplishment was the year 14 Triple J calves showed at the LSU State Livestock Show by four different parishes with multiple champions. Presently John, along with his brother Philip, operates a herd of 150 breeding cows.
John has been an active member of the Vermilion Parish Cattlemen’s Association for 23 years and President for three years. He serves on the Beef Advisory Committee and 4-H Advisory Board. He has been certified as a Master Farmer, Master Cattleman and Master Horseman. John has been a 4-H Leader for 20 plus years and President of Coulee Kinney Drainage Board for 15 years.
In the fall John can always be found at multiple cattle shows operating show rings.
He is currently employed with the Vermilion Parish Assessors Office.
John is married to Becky and has three sons. They are also blessed with 4½ grandchildren – Ridge, Mason, Jett, Emma and future Luke who all love animals as much as he does. I’m sure you will be seeing them in the future at the Cattle Festival. John’s highlight of his day is when the grandchildren say “Pop let’s go check the cows.”
