IRS phone scam circulating in Abbeville

Police also advise businesses to be aware of counterfeit money

The Abbeville Police Department has received multiple complaints from citizens who stated that they have received phone calls from someone claiming to be from the IRS.
The person on the other end of the phone has made threats that the IRS will be filing suit against the citizen for non-payment of back taxes. The phone number that has been used in these complaints has been 706-223-3036.
The Abbeville Police Department has checked into the complaints and is advising citizens that these types of calls are SCAMS.
“Please do not send money to anyone demanding payment or making threats,” Lt. David Hardy said.
The Abbeville Police Department has also received more complaints involving counterfeit money. The latest complaint deals with a citizen finding a $100 bill on the floor of a local food chain.
The APD reminds all businesses to inspect all money, especially larger bills that they receive before releasing goods.
