Pair of golfers play 7 rounds of golf in Abbeville on Father's Day

Summer Solstice, the Earth’s North Pole is at its maximum tilt toward the sun giving us the longest day of sunlight of the year.
A very appropriate choice considering the challenge at hand.
Call it coincidence or well planned, June 21, 2015 also happened to be Father’s Day, the one day a year that fathers everywhere get a reprieve from household chores and responsibilities to truly do what they love the most.
For some it is fishing, grilling outdoors or simply taking an afternoon nap without the worries of all the honey-dos left to complete.
For local golf fanatics, Darrel Gaspard and Karl Lawrence, it was golf; not just the regular 18 holes most men around the planet sneak out to complete before their family arises and calls them home, for Gaspard and Lawrence, it would be a test of stamina and endurance.
At sunrise this past Sunday, I met them on the tee box of the first hole at Vermilion Oaks and wished them luck as they teed off to an audience of bullfrogs, crickets and birds chirping away.
As I asked them what I should title the write-up, Lawrence answered, “I call it the quest for 90.”
That’s right, 90 holes of golf in a single day.
For the non-mathematicians among us, that’s five rounds of golf, 18 holes per round.
Five rounds to be completed in 13 hours.
They each had a cart to help them complete their mission.
I wished the pair luck as I shook their hands, told them I’d have 911 on speed dial. Then I stood back and watched them tee off to complete their exhausting and somewhat admittedly certifiable journey accompanied by sons Jason and Addison.
Also assisting them in their quest was their own team of family members including Karl’s wife Genelle and Darrell’s daughter Shelby, whom rode along and assisted with refreshments and keeping the men hydrated.
History was made at Vermilion Oaks on Sunday, June 21, 2015. Not only did they complete their quest, but they went on complete an impressive 126 holes of golf in a single-day!
Since the establishment of the Abbeville Country Club in 1929, no one to the club's knowledge has completed more than 90 holes.
In preparation, the two have been playing 36 holes every Sunday for the past few years.
When asked why they attempted this, Karl said, “It was on our bucket list.”
