Abbeville Eagles fall short of beating Crowley

The Abbeville Eagles managed to get behind and then rally to either tie the game or take the lead Wednesday night against the Crowley Millers in the American Legion action; However, down 8-6 in their final at bat, the Eagles fell short of retaking the lead, falling 8-7.
The Eagles were down 1-0 after the first inning but rallied to tie it 1-1 on a RBI-ground out by Nick Smalley in the bottom of the second inning.
Crowley stormed back and scored two runs in the top of the third frame to take a 3-1 lead thanks to Eagle errors.
No problem, because the Eagles rallied and scored three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning and retook a 4-3 lead.
Jacob Sagrera got the inning started for the Eagles by getting hit by a pitch. Austin Belaire walked and they were moved over on a sac-bunt by Carson Plaisance.
Ethan Lege grounded out, and that brought home Sagrera to make it 3-2. J.T. Lege, a pinch runner, scored from third on a passed ball that tied it up 3-3.
With Smalley and Cade Boudreaux on base, Gage Trahan knocked home the go-ahead-run with a single.
The lead was short and sweet because Crowley came right back and tied it 4-4 in the top of the fifth inning.
But then Abbeville looked to take control by scoring two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning.
Twin brother Harrison Vicknair walked for the Eagles and Griffin Vicknair doubled, that put the two Vicknair brothers in scoring position.
Sagrera scored Harrison on his ground out, moving Griffin to third base. Belaire, came to bat and he also had a ground out, but it scored Griffin on third base. It put Abbeville up 5-4 after five innings.
On the hill for Abbeville, Harrison Vicnair started on the mound and threw three complete innings. Trahan pitched the fourth and fifth inning.
Crowley scored three runs in the final two innings to capture the lead for good.
Griffin closed, throwing the sixth and seventh inning for Abbeville.
He struggled by hitting the first batter and walking the next one. Crowley scored on a wild pitch and scored the second run on a hit to tie it 6-6.
The Millers scored two more in the top of the seventh inning.
Abbeville tried to rally but fell short in its final at bat.
Abbeville’s Jacob Sagrera drew a leadoff walk for the Eagles in the bottom of the seventh and scored on a two-out single to center field by Ethan Lege. The rally was thwarted two pitches later when Lege was gunned down at second base on a steal attempt to end the game.
Griffin Vicknair suffered the loss, allowing four runs on three hits and three walks. He hit one batter and struck out one in two innings of work.
Griffin Vicknair paced the Eagles’ offense with a 2-for-4 performance that included a double. Lege had one hit and two RBI, Sagrera added a double and an RBI, and Gage Trahan singled in a run. Gage Marceaux, Harrison Vicknair and Cade Boudreaux each had a single on the night.
