What is being built in Maurice?
MAURICE — Thousands who pass daily through the Village of Maurice will notice work being done near the corner of U.S. Highway 167 and La. Hwy. 92.
The result will be an addition to Maurice’s ever growing business base.
“It’s going to be a convenience store and gas station,” Maurice Mayor Wayne Theriot said. “It’s also going to have a sandwich shop.”
Theriot said he is certainly pleased with the addition.
“This is the type of businesses we want to attract,” Theriot said. “This is a locally owned business.
“It’s a local investment into our community.”
The village is also making an
investment into itself. Not far from were the new gas station is going up, Maurice workers are conducting a project to extend sewer lines down Highway 92.
“We have finished the extension project down Etienne (Road),” Theriot said. “Now we are working down 92. They are putting sewer down to the main arteries that are served by our sewer system. We don’t have sewer down 92, with the exception of the Rue des Cannes subdivision. The nursing home in the clinic on 92 get their sewer from the back part. It is not conducive to the development of that area to continue without sewer.
“This will make the properties (in the area) more valuable economically.”
The project is expected to be completed by early July, weather permitting.
“We hope that the rain doesn’t slow things down,” Theriot said with a laugh.
Though it brings a smile to his face, Theriot is serious when he said by the village self-funding the project, it serves as the best use of the funds.
“Instead of having funds invested in the bank,” Theriot said, “receiving very minimum interest, we are putting the funds into ourselves. We are putting in the ground and investing in ourselves.
“The rate of return will be a lot greater.”
