ERATH — Mass of Christian Burial for Genevie G. Mergist, 84, will be 3:30PM Tuesday January 13, 2015 in Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church with Rev. Bill Melancon officiating. Interment will follow in Our Lady of Lourdes Cemetery.Visitation will be at David Funeral Home of Erath Monday from 4:00PM until 10:00PM with a recitation of the rosary at 7:00PM and will resume Tuesday from 8:00 until service time.
Genevie, a graduate of Henry High School and a longtime resident of Erath passed away Sunday January 11, 2015 in a local hospital
She was a 23 year employee of Morris Lahasky Nursing Home, substitute teacher for Erath schools, CCD teacher of religion, and Commissoner of Voters for Vermilion Parish. She was a member of the Catholic Daughters and Ladies Altar Society of Erath. She will best be remembered for devoting her life to raising her children with dignity after her young husband died in a tragic accident in 1959
She is survived by her children; Jordan and wife Liz Mergist of The Woodlands,TX Gwen Mergist of Lafayette,LA and Craig Mergist and wife Barbara of Meaux,LA; brothers Lorgie and Ulysses Peltier; sister Irene Schexnayder; grandchildren Steve Mergist and wife Terri of Houston,TX, Michelle Mergist of Erath, Jill Plumlee and husband Chris of Maurice, Nick Mergist and fiancee’ Brittany McNulty of Maurice, Holly Mergist and Leslie Mergist both of Meaux; great grandchildren Ethan and Emily Mergist, Lindsey and Zachary Jones, MacKenzie Mergist, Sean Herrington, Owen Plumlee, and Scarlet Mergist
She is preceded in death by her parents Marceline and Elmire Migues Gilbert; god parents Whitney and Cecelia Peltier; her husband Belluse Mergist Jr.; her siblings Otis Romero, Maurice and Alton Gilbert, Minnie Fitch, Ava Doucet, Florene Rush, and Beatrice Peltier
Special thanks go to neighbors and friends Jimmy and Janel Segura and Neil Hebert. Drs. Weston Miller and Ronald Lahasky and the staff of Abbeville General Hospital.
