Burnt truck in Vermilion Parish belonged to man from Duson
The Vermilion Parish Sheriff Office is trying to put the pieces together on why a black Chevrolet truck burned in a sugar cane field last week.
On Tuesday, Major Darryl LeBlanc of the Sheriff’s Office released the name of the owner of the truck after matching vin numbers.
The Major said the truck belongs to Benjamin Menard of Duson. The make and model of the truck is a 2013 black Chevrolet four wheel drive.
It was reported stolen early Friday morning, about six hours after it burned in a sugar cane field.
Major Leblanc said Menard was at a party on Roy Road, which is less than a mile away from where the truck caught fire.
The truck was found burning on Roosevelt Road, which is not far from the Woodlawn Bridge, north of Abbeville.
A sugar cane farmer saw the burning truck and called 911 at 3:13 in the morning last week.
The Maurice Volunteer Fire Department arrived on the scene and quickly put out the fire.
The vin number on the dashboard of the truck was burnt, so the Sheriff’s Office had to locate the vin number underneath the truck. Once the number was located, it was crossed matched to Menard’s truck. On Tuesday, the two numbers matched.
The Sheriff’s Office is not 100 percent sure if the truck accidently caught fire or if it was set on fire. Major LeBlanc said the detectives are still interviewing people who were at the party.
