Abbeville man charged with attempted first degree murder of a police officer for allegedly trying to run over a Lafayette police officer
Abbeville’s own Travis Briggs, 26, was arrested by the Lafayette Police Department and charged with attempted 1st degree murder of a police officer.
This past Friday, at approximately 12:20 am, Lafayette Police responded to an apartment complex in the 300 block of McDonald regarding a domestic disturbance.
When responding officers arrived, they discovered from the victim that her ex-boyfriend had fled the area. Officers documented the incident and instructed the victim to call police if the suspect returned.
At approximately 1:05 a.m., Lafayette Police received a second call that the ex-boyfriend had returned and was causing another disturbance.
When a Lafayette police officer arrived, the suspect ran to an adjacent parking lot and the officer gave chase.
The suspect entered a vehicle, at which time he backed into a parked car, then sped toward the responding officer.
The officer fired two shots at the suspect, striking the driver’s side door and front tire. The suspect sped out of the parking lot, but was stopped a short time later near the intersection of Dulles and Omega streets.
Briggs was arrested and charged with Attempted 1st Degree Murder of a Police Officer.
Briggs was not injured during the incident.
The Lafayette Police Department’s is investigating the incident. The Lafayette police officer involved has been placed on paid administrative leave. The officer was not injured during the incident.
The investigation remains ongoing.
