Kaplan Police Chief warns about increase in synthetic marijuana usage

KAPLAN - Kaplan Police Chief Boyd Adams wants to send out a message to the citizens of Kaplan on the dangers of synthetic marijuana.
“During the past several months,” said Adams, “ I have seen an increase in the amount of cases that evolve around the use of synthetic marijuana in the city.
“I am also asking parents to be aware that synthetic marijuana carries many names such as Spice, K2, No More, Nice Guy and hundred of other names.
“By whatever name you call it, it is poison to your body,” he said.
In reality, synthetic marijuana is very different from marijuana. They contain powerful chemicals called cannabimi-metics and can cause dangerous health issues. The drugs are made specifically to be abused. Synthetic marijuana is not tested for safety and users don’t really know exactly what chemicals they are putting into their bodies.
These drugs are extremely dangerous and addictive, said Adams.
The health effects can be life threatening and can include:
•Sever agitation and anxiety
•Fast racing heartbeat and higher blood pressure
•Nausea and vomiting
•Muscle spasms, seizures and tremors
•Intense hallucinations and psychotic episodes
•Suicidal and other harmful thoughts and/or actions
If someone uses synthetic marijuana you should call your local poison control center at 1-800-222-1222. There are experts waiting to answer calls. The experts will help you determine if the person can be treated at home or whether he or she must go to a hospital.
Dial 911 immediately if someone, stops breathing, Collapses or has a seizure.
“In the last few months we have seen all these effect,” Adams said. “I am very concerned about the increased number of people using this drug. The drug is very dangerous and could possibly cause permanent damage to the person consuming.”
