Abbeville High student wins Mascot of the Year

Aaron Dartest road in the Christmas Parade to display his Mascot of the Year award.

Winning “Mascot of the Year” in Acadiana is almost as hard as winning a state championship.
At the start of football season, a sports website called “Acadiana Post Game” began a Mascot of the Year contest for 54 high schools in Acadiana.
A playoff bracket was set up featuring all of the high schools in the area.
Each week, starting back in August, fans voted for six mascots and the winner of that week, moved through the bracket.
Abbeville High’s mascot Aaron Dartest competed in Week 5 and he advanced to the quarterfinals after beating six schools.
In Week 11, he went head-to-head in fan voting against Ascension Episcopal Gators, and the Cecilia Bulldogs.
He cruised to victory in that round.
Then in the final round, he went against the mascots for the Lafayette Lions and the Kaplan Pirates.
By only four votes, Abbeville High’s Aaron Dartest was voted Mascot of the Year in Acadiana.
His mother, Cynthia Dartest got the news last week.
He recently rode in the Abbeville Christmas Parade.
His mother was a big reason he won because she got the word out for people to vote for him.
“I wanted his senior year to be a memorable year,” said his mother.
Aaron did not know he had won until AHS Principal Ivy Landry announced it over the intercom.
“I was excited to hear I won,” said Aaron. “From the beginning all I wanted to do was represent Abbeville High in a positive way.”
Landry was happy to read the news to the student body.
“The Abbeville High School family is very proud of Aaron and his accomplishments,” said Landry. “Aaron is a great example of what happens if you work hard and don’t let anything get in your way.”
