Eagles battle Blue Gators for outright district title

The Vermilion Catholic Eagles put their eight-game win streak on the line when they battle the Ascension Episcopal Blue Gators for the District 7-1A title tonight.
“We want to win the district outright, but we’ve already sealed at least a piece of the district,” said head coach Russell Kuhns. “It means a lot to be able to win it again. I don’t think we’ve lost a district game here in four years. We know there is a lot on the line and we have to come to play.”
Vermilion Catholic (8-1, 4-0) has been on the win streak, since losing in week 1 against Catholic High of New Iberia, and is coming off of a 23-0 victory over Hanson Memorial last week.
The Eagles offense accounted for 376 yards offense, with quarterback Hunter Frith throwing for a season-high 324 yards.
Defensively, Vermilion Catholic held Hanson to 34 yards on offense, while forcing three interceptions by quarterback Britt Young.
Ascension Episcopal (7-2, 4-1) is on a two game win streak of their own, most recently a 34-32 win over Highland Baptist.
Ja’Ceiry Linzer leads the Blue Gator offense.
On the season, Linzer has rushed for 1,494 yards and 23 rushing touchdowns. Quarterback Jake Arceneaux has thrown for 1,252 yards so far this season.
Kuhns talked about what his team will have to do to be successful against Linzer and the Blue Gator rushing attack.
“We just have to play sound defense like we’ve been doing,” said Kuhns. “We just have to wrap up and hit him low.”
Aside from the District 7-1A title on the line, the Eagles also have their No.1 ranking in the Division IV power rankings hanging in the balance.
“That’s been our goal all year,” Kuhns said. “After the first game of the season, we have been taking care of business up to this point. We expected to do it (No. 1 ranking) because that’s been our goal. If you don’t expect to do it, it will never happen.”
Kickoff is set for 7 from Vermilion Catholic Stadium.
